ear plugs, hearing loss, and you

How many people out there are still riding without some kind of hearing protection?  I'm always kind of surprised when I see someone who doesn't wear any and declines an extra pair I may have.

Can you imagine when you're older having your hearing replaced with a constant high pitched ringing?  That's right.  It's not a silent loss of hearing.

don't see the big deal unless you have D&D pipes then I can understand the need!  I've ridden for years and have never used a pair.  I don't like anything that would reduce my focus and concentration when riding.  You need to be able to hear what's going on around you and with your wheels so I don't wear ear plugs or music although I have been tempted to put my Ipod earplugs in!  GOOGS

I started wearing them only this year...makes a HUGE difference for me. I don't seem to get as tire(I'm sure not related) and can actually hear after doing 400 miles on the bike Yes

You're not going to know you have a problem until it's too late. I always wear plugs on the Bandit and it doesn't do anything to my focus or safety. I still hear everything, just softer and with some of the higher frequencies filtered out. Actually makes the motor sound better...

I have to agree, I feel less drained when I wear earplugs.  All the wind noise and exhaust tones almost seam to tire me out.  I've been wearing ear plugs for a while now and I'm glad I have been.

hhhhmmmmm I think I will try a pair today. I work in a loud place and I know they just make you seem more refreshed. Never had the problem riding, mainly due to the fact I don't ride long, but I do know how loud noises can drain you. when the power goes out at work I feel SOOOO refreshed.

TRUTH...I have mild tinnitus from a previous job/ loud music/ car stereo / whatever, but it sux. I rode without plugs for about a 6months, but it made it worse.  Even with ear plugs it still kinda stirs up the ringing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinnitus

Re: ear plugs, hearing loss, and you

If anything, wearing the earplugs will help your concentration as they remove most of the annoying high pitched stuff, but you can still hear whats going on around you just fine.

They are a must on the track as they can help prevent getting spooked by an unexpected pass, etc. when someones exhaust is two feet from your face.

Re: ear plugs, hearing loss, and you

I constantly preach the use of hearing protection.... but you'd be surprised at how many people turn it down or flat out refuse to try it.

The most common complaint that I hear is that "I can't hear what's going on around me or I can't hear traffic" .. well, this couldn't be farther from the truth.

Your biggest source of noise on a bike is WIND NOISE... and ear plugs attenuate most of it to the point that it makes it EASIER to hear other sounds around you other than wind... cars, bikes, your own bikes mechanics, etc...  try it and see, you'd be amazed.

If you aren't currently using hearing protection... give it a shot.  I'll be honest, the first few times I tried it I hated it... because I simply wasn't used to wearing hearing protection on a bike.  Now if I where to try and ride without hearing protection it would drive me nuts... once you get used to it, you LOVE it!

Good post. Just reminded me that I'm down to my last pair. I'm a fan of the Howard Leight LaserLite disposable plugs, but haven't been able to find them in a drug store lately.

I've been wearing ear plugs for about 3 years now, and now I can't stand to ride without them. Makes a huge difference both on the ride to work and at the track.

i'll just pile onto what everyone else have said so far... ear plugs will save your hearing, help you concentrate and reduce your tiredness overall allowing you to ride longer, safer.

i bought a box of 200 pairs of green howard leight's for around $20 (30db reduction) in the late 90s, and i still have half the box left.  i reuse a pair for weeks/months.  one of the best investments ever for riding gear.

Wow some of you...um wont mention who, needs to seriously edumacate yourself on noise levels and hearing lose before it's too late.

And the day I actually need to hear to drive safely and know my surroundings is the day I'd like to be put out of my misery.

Also one would be suprised at what you can't hear anyways with all the wind noise, engine noise(Stock exhaust).

Also some folks say they been riding for X amoutn of years. So what. How many miles you ride actually is what matters. I remember a rider making a comment that have been riding for three years. Come to find out they only had like 1,700 street miles put in on those three years. Highly doubt you will get much hearing lose from that. Highly doubt with those miles they would have much of anything. LOL

Also I wear ear phones most o fthe times, but the ones I am currently using now blocks out just as much noise as plugs. I also keep the mp3 player sound level super low. I can barely hear it running, can only make out maybe half the songs it's so low..

Highly recommend this foam type. Better yet are the ear plugs that mold to your ear.

Had a pair of custome ear plugs made at a New York Bike Show a few years back.  Been using them every since for both street riding and track days. I don't leave home with out them.

I have to sets of ear plugs:

*I prefer the ones below cuz there only $2.00, there attached by a string, and there rubber (easier to put in ear IMO).
