Do you warn others drivers/ riders about speed traps?

If your going down the road and you pass a cop on the side of the raod do you warn cars and bikes in the oncoming lane? I don't see people doing this much anymore. When I was younger it seems like people would always flash their high beams at you to warn you. There have been a few occasions where a cager saved my butt by flashing his high beams at me. Did they pass a law against this common coutesy or are people just rude?

What is the proper way to warn other bikers? I tried the whole patting the top of my helmet thing but I'm starting to think that a lot of bikers don't know what that means.

Re: Do you warn others drivers/ riders about speed traps?

Yes, I will so long as its a smaller road, and within a mile or so of the trap. Otherwise by the time they get to it, they'll have sped back up.

I do notice people warning me, but you're right, its not as often. I almost blew past three cops today parked along a curve in ridge road (blew for a newbie... maybe 10-15 over the posted 35) and had just passed a car that didn't do anything...

As far as right way to go, I'd guess flashing the lights is universal? Maybe pat your helmet while flashing your lights and rubbing your belly? (And if you can do that, and ride a bike, I've got $5 for ya!)

And I believe there are laws that prohibit warning about speed traps, but am about to pass out so am not doing the necessary googling, sorry.

Life's like a machine gun... just close your eyes, squeeze the trigger, and pray you hit what you wanted.

    (1) There's no law against warning oncoming drivers of a speed trap.

    (2) I still warn other drivers as a courtesy so long as I'm within 1 mile of the trap.

    (3) Experienced drivers know what a flash / pat on the helmet means.

    (4) Experienced drivers will be thankful for the warning, since most experienced drivers know when and when not to speed and have no points on their license  because other experienced drivers looked out for them before they got caught slippin' Yes

I do warn others (cars or bikes) as long as it is fairly close to where the cops are (within the mile).  Motorcycle Cops are out on Beulah RD, just right before Ft Belvoir, and the only once giving me a warning are other riders, never cagers.  I am wondering why that is....but than again, I always ride speed limit in that area anyway Cool

it used to be much more common about 10 or more years ago.  i think everyone around here has the assholeish attitude of "better you than me".

i still give a warning to others when i can.  i was coming in on 66 2 or 3 years ago with steelrain,  pushing well into the triples almost the whole way from harrisonburg.  we got to that section of jersey wall just before haymarket (you know,  the long left handed sweeper) where there is always a cop waiting for you to come around that corner.  we could see one waiting,  so we slowed down to about 70.  well just after we passed out of sight,  we lit it up again.  a corvette traveling west was high beaming us,  so we slowed down only to find another trooper being sneaky,  hiding behind a bridge shooting radar on cars as they passed by.  he was only a mile or so past the last trooper.

so yeah,  i appreciate when others warn me,  so i give up  a warning in hopes others will pick up the habit too.

I DONT THINK ITS SELFISH ATTITUDE.  I THINK THEY ARE TOO PREOCCUPIED WITH ALL THE SHYT IN THEIR CARS THESE DAYS.  (fawkin caps lock) but i rarely see someone flashing lights anymore.  shyt my dad is a retired cop and taught me about this when i was little.  lol.

the funny thing is when i do flash oncoming drivers i look to see who hits the brakes and noone ever does.   maybe the se newer drivers dont know what it means.

and when i see someone flashing the lights i always wave to acknowledge that i see them and thanks.

and dont let cops see you.  its interfering with police work and they will come after you!

i try to but sometimes the situation doesn't really work out so well....are you really going to be able to notice the one car that is flashing high beams on I-270 with the sun brightly shining?

i think before the advent of daytime running lights the high-beam flash was more NOTICEABLE...now it's hard to spot unless it's on a less-traveled country road.

I still warn people.  They do a lot of sneeky speed traps near my house on roads that change speed limits often.  They love to set up down hills approaching stop lights where people usually speed up to make the light or just because they let it go on the hill.

They are just revenue collectors and this has nothing to do with safety.  I can't stand speed traps.

The problem with that is that there's only a handful of good drivers in the DC Metro area.  Everyone else either doesn't know or doesn't care.

If the people are traveling in the same direction and are coming up fast on me, then I'll warn them with a hand signal.  Otherwise no, because people don't know what the fack you mean when you flash your high beams.  I do this all the time when people are driving at night with no lights and I can't even remember that last time someone actually turned their lights on....  Idea

I always see them there and further up the road near the turn off for the Franconia DMV.  I just so happened to be doing the speed limit through there one day and saw them, so I don't speed at all there anymore.

I warn drivers about sitting cops or speed traps every chance I get. You're right, I don't get warned as much now as I used to in this area, but I know for a fact other areas in the US, people will warn you just as much now as they used to.

ALWAYS!  I always warn others.  I got a strobe-chirp from another MSP up the street once too.  He saw me warning others about 1/4 mile up the street.  It probably falls within the "Obstruction of justice" realm but fawk 'em.  They need to be patrolling instead of sleeping and waiting for the radar to tell 'em when to do their jobs.

There were tons of cops all the way back from VIR today and I made sure I warned others on RT58.

I do, I actually got warned on Shady grove road going towards river a bit past 28..  SUV flashed the lights at me (i was railing shady grove at 70+).. slowed down..  2-3 minutes down the road motorcycle cops were shooting radar..  they looked PISSED.

i was doing 30 in a 25, i waved at them and they waved me back..

i'll flash my lights or pat my helmet for other bikes, but most of the time people are stupid.

I always do this... it's common courtesy and maybe I'll get some good karma out of it in the form of others warning me.

    LOL, and you don't ?!

I've gotten a warning, flashing headlights, recently in Ohio, and I'm thankful for it, 'cause the cops were just around the corner.  It was a guy in a pick-up truck.

I'd warn other bikers when I'm on my bike, sure, but cars?  Never.

How about when I'm driving?  I don't know, because I have no experience.  I'm never using my car when it's nice to ride, and if I end up using my car, the weather will be so crap, there won't be any bikes on the road anyway, much less a need for speed.

i don't think experience really counts one way or the other, there are situations where even the most experienced driver/rider will get nailed.

like how about rolling radar coming the other direction...almost impossible to plan for...unless you have a detector.  i've noticed moco using tripods for laser nowadays...i wonder if they realized how inaccurate handheld laser is.

I always pat my helmet or flash my lights to on-comming victims.  I don't think many people around here know what it means anymore... seems none of them slow down.  Espc on RT 1.

Now on the other hand I was just on leave in my home state of GA just south of ATL.  I was amazed when traveling south on hwy 19/41 just past Hampton a guy flashed his lights at me.  I almost thought it was a mistake since no one here does it but cut my speed anyway (I was about 65 in a 55).  Then a mile up the road 2 Spaulding CO Sherrifs were running radar... a gaggle of folks pulled over behind them 2 more writing paper.

At least the practice is still alive in the Dirty South.

i got warned by a lady in a benz about 2 weeks ago while coming up 95 north from VA. the cop was in the left lane with about 5 cars behind it, so i couldnt see him ahead of the pack.

i was cruising along and she rolled her window down to warn me before i passed the pack of cars. it saved me from a ticket :)
