schwinn made the homegrown frames which were made in the USA,  very durable and very light.  i have always wanted one of these bikes.  anyfunk,  this bike seems to be a nice bike with good components.  price is pretty good.  http://classifieds.mtbr.com/showproduct.php?product=23450&cat=4

kevin look at medium or small frames your the same size as me and large is too big..it will hurt your back after 10 or 12 miles in the woods..

test ride bikes first.  i dont know how tall you are but you might want to get a smaller frame size if you are going to be doing hardcore stuff.

homegrown's are great! i have one from quite a few yrs ago and i love it.

kev, i ride a 17' and i could go a size smaller... i'd say ride it and see if you like it... but fit is largely persoal preference. you can also adjust the fit too...

i like smaller frames because i really enjoy the techincal stuff.

yo which one of these is better? component wise...for some reason i tend to think that the 5xx is better...also based on some light browsing of the MTBR forums about it...

    http://www.forgebikes.com/saw7.asp      $350

    http://www.forgebikes.com/saw5blu.asp       $320

make sure you consider resale value so when this fad (at best) dies in a month you can re-huck it off to someone else.
