Wiring dual headlights instead of single

Kicking around some ideas for a project - as part of it I'd like to set up two smaller headlights in place of a single larger one that I have now.  I'd like to wire them so that one runs as the low beam and then when I switch to high they both come on.  Has anyone done this or something similar?

I've poked around a little online and found one or two folks that have gone with dual lights on the same bike as mine, but they just ran both lights as the low.  Someone I know suggested that I might need a diode.  This sound like the right direction?

I'm assuming the light now is a dual filiment? has high and low in the same bulb. if so you could cut into the wire loom and separate the high and low wires. they may share a ground...so having the schematics would be helpful. you'll also find them helpful in figuring out what wire is what. Make sure you have a multimeter on hand. I Don't think you'll need a diode... but don't hold me to that as I haven't seen the bike or schematics. good luck.
    But that's just my opinion.

Just a single bulb right now.  I'll definitely be checking out a wiring diagram, just trying to get an idea of whether or not it's feasible.  So it sounds do-able.  Not gonna start on it for a little while but I'll post up results once I get it going.  Thanks for the input. Yes

depending on your bike, i'd recommend setting up relays.  hook up the dual headlights directly to the battery with proper gauge wiring, then use the existing low/high beam wiring to switch the relays on and off.  atleast on my 2000 bandit, doing it this way dramatically increased the brightness just by using a smaller gauge (thicker) wire.
