Tags can be thought of as "Categories". Tags allow your visitors to quickly jump into their favorite category instead of swimming through an ocean of posts to get to what they want. The Tag cloud is generated to give weights to each tag based on various factors including how many posts are under a particular tag. There is some mathematics involved in determining the font size of each tag within the tag cloud, this is ofcouse assuming people actually use the tags well, and not put Big Sack in Tag Deez in everyone.
