I literally just finished my AR build a few minutes ago. Total cost (though I still need either iron sights or a scope) is $612.72 for essentially a 24" DPMS... Few random bits I put on because I liked them more than DPMS, but 85% DPMS. Sure you can buy one, but that whole 'militia' argument requires some gun smiths. Pick up a stripped lower at the gun show, and build it yourself from Brownells or MidwayUSA.

 

And yea, I'd expect this to be packed, and doing brisk business (go Friday). I was at the Frederick show this past weekend and dang. You could barely walk around in there, and the wait to talk to someone to be able to buy a gun was a good 5-10 minutes. 

 

(They had a nickel plated Desert Eagle, believe it was around $1600ish)

 

Yes it would be cheaper to buy and build!

its cheaper and you can customize it the way you want!

usual build will be about $600-$900 depending on what barrel you want!

The better the barrel the more the price.

All fru except for Fairfax. Fairfax has a standard 5-day? waiting period. Well I say that but that may not be the case anymore. Back in the 1998 time frame I purchased a handgun from Sport Authority in Springfield Mall. Because it was located in Fairfax it had to be cleared by the police dept, takes 5 days.

It that still the case?

I got my stuff from Gun shops outside of fairfax after that BS.

No Longer the case! VA has no wait period except for the NICS check

The 1993 Virginia General Assembly amended and reenacted §18.2-308.2:2, Code of Virginia, making it unlawful for any person who is not a licensed firearms dealer to purchase more than 1 handgun within any 30-day period. The Virginia State Police is responsible for accepting and processing the Multiple Handgun Purchase Application and Multiple Handgun Purchase Certificate, when purchases in excess of one handgun within a 30-day period can be justified.  Please refer to Multiple Handgun Purchase Applications in this web site.  There is no restriction on the number of rifles and shotguns that may be purchased during any period of time

For those who want to build an AR and save money, go buy the Lowers first. since that will be the piece that you will have to go through NICS check.

If you buy a stripped lower make sure you buy a kit.

and then get a full upper with a heavy barrel .

If you buy a Full Lower and Full upper it just takes to pins to assemble less then a min.

 

For full lowers expect to pay from $150-$250

Full Uppers expect to pay $400-$600 depending on what quality you want for a barrel.

for all those who are looking to build an AR

Go early and pick up your lower recievers first!

then buy the rest since the only part you need to go through NICS for is the lower reciever

If you get a stripped reciever it will take some time to build but not that long! they have a gun smith at the show and can usually assemble a lower in no time.
