Also much many flowers do people usually send for this type of situation?  A dozen? More?  I dunno.  I'm not usually the romantic type

This is the first time I've seen this. Much better than flowers IMO. 3 Dollar Gas, did you use them before? How is the quality? My concern would be cut fruit that has been sitting there all day and getting funky.

Yep lots of times!!!  I've used the Waldorf and Crystal City locations and they have been top-notch everytime.  It's been a big hit and since it's going to the job, make sure you order a small/med one that she can choose to share if she doesn't want to eat all of it.  As a matter of fact, she's brought it home (fridge) and it was fresh the next day also for lunch.  Just make sure you get a nice cup so she can use it later for a penholder, soups & lunch this winter and a nice card.  When you fill out the online order, you can specify what to put into the card and the cup.  Make sure you order in advance so the delivery is guaranteed right around 10am which is a perfect time to receive fruit before the lunch hunger pains kick in.

i use rainbow florist.  and i always send 2 dozen long stems.  1 is nice but 2 shows you got it goins on!

I've used 1-800-Flowers before.  Next-day delivery and email alerts when the order is received and delivery was successful.

 MY WIFE'S OFICE SENT HER A DOZEN ROSES WHEN OUR BABY WAS BORN USING 1-800-FLOWERS... I WAS IMPRESSED AT THE QUALITY OF THE FLOWERS AND HOW IT WAS NICELY PACKAGED.
