Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker has set the bar high for Gotham City villains, but reports in the US say studio bosses have set their sights on Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.

"Producers are convinced that the role of The Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny's a pro. He'll be able to take direction and still make the character his own. And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman?" a source said.

They could be joining Angelina Jolie - the actress is reported to be after the role of Catwoman.

The Riddler was played by Jim Carrey in 1995 film Batman Forever and Frank Gorshin in the Sixties television series. As for The Penguin, he was portrayed on the small screen by Burgess Meredith and in 1992 film Batman returns by Danny DeVito.

Plans for the sequel are yet to be announced but it is likely to star Christian Bale reprising his role as The Caped Crusader.

The Dark Knight has smashed box office records in the US, taking $314 million in just 10 days.

There is even talk of it challenging Titanic to become the biggest movie of all time. Titanic took $600 million in the US. The Dark Knight certainly looks set to reach second place in the all-time chart and beat Star Wars, which made $460 million.

 

 

 

Hoffman as the penguin, and Jolie as catwoman..  hmm..        depp and hoffman I can see..   jolie as catwoman..   ehh.. i dunno.

If Depp takes that role I can guarantee you he will play an outstading role.

Hoffman (do you mean Dustin Hoffman?) I can kinda see him in that. Not sure.

Angelina J. as Cat woman, FACK YEAH! I can actually see her rocking that spot. It's been a while since I've seen her boobies dancing. WOOHOO! 

Why do they always have to bring more and more villians to each movie? Depp might be good if they keep with the serious tone of the new movies.

personally, i could do without catwoman altogether...    

depp i think is a GREAT choice for this series. and i was hoping that the next bad guy would be the riddler.  i can see it going really well as long as they stick to the "dark" theme that they have been going with, and Im sure they will.  hoffman as the penguin i think is also a good choice.  again.. if its done right. 

i have faith in this franchise though.  Christopher Nolan seems to really know his stuff.

Does anyone else find it very interesting that the new Batman series isn't even acknowledging the old set of movies?  Don't get me wrong, I like what they've done with the new series, but most of the time movies seem to pick up where the other one's left off.  Which is why the Batman series started going down the tubes.  The Dark Knight style of movies are keeping it very real and gritty and far less comic booky than the other ones.  I like that Batman can be hurt, the some-what realism of stunts and the fact that it's capture in today's time and not the 50's or something like that.

And Oh... I think Depp would make an excellent Riddler.

i think that was the whole point.  this new series is almost like a "do over" i think...dark, gritty (the way batman was intended to be)  the last few batman movies were so over the top and cartoonish it was rediculous.  i personally dont acknowledge any of the old batman movies aside from the ones tim burton directed. those 2 were the only good ones imo.

Would be a great pick as along as he avoids "borrowing" from his POTC char., other than that it would be really interesting to see how he would approach the Riddler role.

I can see them doing the penguin well. Basically he is a deformed guy who is pretty pissed at the world. Shouldn't be too hard to make that realistic and gritty.

Riddler is kind of gimmicky IMO. I mean I can see how it could be done if they keep it less riddle and more evil. I just hope they don't do the "die hard 3" thing where Batman would be running all over town solving riddles.

I agree, that would diminish the movies "grit" factor.

Tough one.  Riddler shouldn't be hard to do better than Jim Carey, but Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito did a damn good job as Catwoman and Penguin.  Especially DeVito.

Huh?

You have to be a Batman comic book geek(guilty!) to get that one. Bane was a bad azz(big musclehead that pumped his body full of the drug Venom to make his body freakshly big) who wanted to break Batman's spirit before he fought him. He broke all of the crazies out of Arkham, and watched from afar as Batman fought them one after the other. When Batman was finally exhausted and nearly unable to fight, Bane beat his azz, ending the battle by breaking Batman's back over his knee. After that, Bruce Wayne allows Azrael to become Batman while he's out of action. Azrael ended up getting a bit crazy and violent as Batman, and allows a bad guy to fall to his death.

Anyway, not sure they could pull off Bane as the main villian, without making it to cartoonish/CGI-ish.
